Shaping of waterways

This section tells you how Lake Kussharo was formed. It also shows the geological and topographical ground of Bihoro in conjunction with volcanic activities, and river flows.x

Life history with riverbasin

This section brings you to the world of Bihoro in ancient times through archaeological materrials. You can appreciate the foot steps o f our indigenous people who lived in the wide environment long before we were born.

Rivers and Kotan


It persents the culture and way of life of the Ainu people. You can see a launching ceremony of an Ainu boat and a display of actual clothes, wooden products and other items.

Nature in riverbasin
It shows various ecology of animals and plants grown in Bihoro. Summer time is shown above the ground with display of a river, trees and grassland. For winter, you can see the hibernation of animals and theroots of trees in the lower part of the display.
Use of rivers
Riverbasin in the time of reclamation was in great demand as the power of water mills and for transportation. Bihoro town started by streams, has been developed and now a days it has become the base of tourism in north eastern of Hokkaido. This section shows the relief mode1 of this area as wall as national parks.

Reclamation and rivers

Man power using rakes, hooks and other instruments took the lead in opening up the land at first.
However, horses became popular to utilaze later on.
Horses played an important role in terms of reclamation in Hokkaido.
